First Year: Emergence Excerpt (Pite)
This section of the piece starts with an ensemble including men and women on stage.
There 6 men downstage left and upstage right and 6 women downstage right and upstage left.
Both groups of the male dancers are dancing the same phrase in unison and both groups of the female dancers are performing a different phrase in unison which shows a clear contrast between the two.
The overall movement style of the section throughout has a continuous flow and there are no moments of stillness throughout.
After a few 8 counts into this first section, the two groups of female dancers run off stage left which leads another group of 6 male dancers running on stage from stage right.
Once all on stage together, this is when we first see the choreographic device of unison being used which I personally think benefits this section as it makes the dynamics a lot stronger
After a few count, the two female groups and one more group of 6 run back onto stage and continue to execute a different phrase to the male dancers in unison as well so the idea of contrast between the two still continues.
46 seconds into this section, the whole ensemble performs altogether in unison repeating the same few movements over and over showing another choreographic device being used.
At 1:09 the lighting changes from the orange wash it had been from the very start to a blue wash across the stage and stays that colour til the end of the section where the light fades. Using the darker lighting makes the dancers into more of a silhouette but their movements are still clear to see.
The costume for the male dancers consists of black jeans and black ballet shoes where as the female dancers are a black leotard with a slight skirt look and pointe shoes altogether creating a classical
look.
The physical setting only involves a backdrop which as what I think is a black hole which separates apart into individual lines. In my opinion, I think it links to the name of the piece 'Emergence Excerpt' as the dancers could perhaps be emerging from this black hole on to the stage.
The accompaniment sounds quite mechanical in the way of having strong repetitive sounds which compliments the movement style of this piece extremely well.
However, whilst the ensemble is performing the last repeating motif in unison, natural sound is heard when they use breath in the movement where they lift both arms up ,eye line to the front and feet in fifth. Only in this movement is where the natural sound occurs.
This I think is a different style to the previous pieces I have analysed as it seems a lot more classical than her known contemporary style.
The emotion and intention behind this piece seems very powerful and strong consisting of complementing each other when dancing in unison and sections of contrast when the groups are executing different phrases to each other. However, they may be different phrases but the movement and energy behind it is still the same strong continuous style.
I do like this piece and Pite's version of a more classical choreography but in my opinion I prefer her more contemporary style as for me it relates to my own movement style.
To compare this piece to, for example; 'Flight Pattern', the movement style behind it is very different so I find these two pieces by her the easiest to compare.
Firstly, this piece included a more of a classical costuming for example; including leotards and pointe shoes whereas 'Flight Pattern' had loose clothing and linked to the intention of the story.

Good work! For further development, what do you think the piece trying to communicate or say to its audience? What was the purpose behind the movement and music and how did this have an effect on the piece? In your opinion, do you think the piece was successful - were there any parts you liked/disliked? Reflecting back at all three pieces, which piece did you like best and why? Can you notice any similarities and differences between each of the three pieces? Please expand your analysis by discussing how the emotion and dynamic/ intention differed?
ReplyDeleteLinking to the physical setting and the title of the piece, my personal view of it is that the ensemble are 'emerging' from the black hole on the backdrop and there are sections where a group run off stage and another group is added on so during the piece, the dancers could perhaps be going in and out of this 'black hole'.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this piece and including pointe shoes which I haven't seen in her pieces that I have analysed was interesting and I do think it benefited the piece for sure.
This piece that I evaluated above was the only ensemble piece that I have watched as the other works were both based on duet and partner work.
'Flight Pattern' I think involved more theatricality and emotion than the other two pieces which made the overall piece a bit stronger as it was based on a global issue that is currently happening to this day.
