First Year: Flight Pattern (Pite)

The section starts with the female dancer on the floor with her back facing the audience and cradling a bundle which I think is portraying the image of a baby in a swaddle. The energy as soon as the music begins, the energy is already very slow and the flow of it altogether is very smooth and controlled in some areas.
The way of her movement conveys a sense of pain and desperation as she looks out into the space as if she's longing for someone or waiting for someone to help.
In these first few seconds into the section, her movements are all on the floor which continues with the idea of desperation and could enhance the emotion of her being weak.

The female dancer then unravels the blanket and the male dancer comes to her when she starts to shake and fall back in reveal that her 'baby' isn't there.
This becomes the starting point of this duet as the male duet performs numerous lifts and where the female is draped over his shoulder which continues the idea of her weakness.
Apart from the beginning, there are no parts where the dancers are apart, they have always seemed connected in their partner work, whether it being lifts or just any contact work.

The physical setting is a plain black backdrop so the main focus is on the featured duet which I think works well in all dance pieces as you don't want the audience to get distracted on anything but the dance itself. However in this particular section, Pite has placed some dancers across the back of the stage which compliments Pite's overall idea which I will mention below.
The costumes are shown as quite casual as they wear a plain white vest top with dark navy tight trousers which links clearly to Pite's annual idea of this piece altogether. Pite mentions in an interview that she wanted to create a dance based on being in a situation or a place where your being held or stuck and you can't do anything about it so incorporating more of a casual style to her costume makes the piece more realistic in a way.
The accompaniment is a slow score with the involvement of string instruments such as a violin or cello but has a female opera singer which links well to the very first few counts of this piece as the voice could perhaps represent the female dancer as she is singing in such desperation and compliments the dancers movements of this emotion.
And finally the lighting in this section is a blackout but has a spotlight on the female dancer which slightly shows some of the dancers sitting at the back of the stage but not so much that they distract you from the female dancers movement. Once the male dancer begins to dance with her, the lighting changes and the spotlight becomes bigger so your able to see their whole movement as a duet clearly.

The overall structure and style does not include much precision but a lot of loose movements which I think helps the dancers emotions to come across more clearly as their movement style isn't as forced.
But altogether, I draw my movement style from contemporary styles like that so when I watch pieces like Crystal Pite's it is almost inspiring to watch and educational in the way of learning new ways of contact work for example.

To conclude, my impression of this section of this piece is very powerful and moving and the use of costume as a prop worked really successfully so I overall enjoyed watching this piece.

  1. I really enjoyed reading through your review on ‘Flight Patterns’ and your thoughts towards this piece. You have gone into great detail about the music which shows your understanding towards the piece. Also, linking your own thoughts and feelings gives the audience an understanding of your perspective which is really good. Well done.
Is there anything in this piece which you are wanting to link to your own creative work?

    1. Thankyou Abi. I chose Crystal Pite from the beginning because of her specific movement style being contemporary based with very small elements of ballet. In this piece particularly, it is quite theatrical and the only way I can think of perhaps relating to this work is that I involve the use of breath in my piece to help my idea of sleep portray to the audience.

    1. I really enjoyed watching this piece as I found it quite moving as she focused this piece about a serious global issue. She included the theatricality needed to portray the story across from the audience and including the costume as well which definitely adds to this piece.
I honestly believe that the purpose of the piece was conveyed clearly across to the audience through the use of intense movement style and like I mentioned above with their use of theatricality in their movement. I really enjoyed watching the duet with the female and male dancer that was highlighted in the section of the video I watched and the emotion behind it was really powerful and drew my attention when she used her piece of cloth and portrayed it as a baby in a swaddle.
