First Year: Cannon Duets (Pite)

The duet starts with the male and female dancer walking on stage towards each other from opposite sides of the stage. This already creates an intense and strong ambiance as they walk to each other in a sense of urgency and as soon as they meet they fall into movement.
In this section, there is a lot of slow and controlled contact work throughout the first minute and a half including counter balances, small lifts and giving their weight to one another. There is a continuous line and movement and there are no pauses or moments of stillness in this first section of the duet.

After a minute and a half into this duet, the music speeds up which then creates the movement to become a faster pace.The contact work continues however the movement becomes a little bit chaotic and frantic but there are times where they break away and execute a phrase in unison side by side.
After a small period of the faster music, another duet runs in on stage from the same side and run into another phrase of contact work where one of the dancers from running kneels on the stage and the other dancer runs to do an arabesque kick leaning on the dancers back.
Whilst this is being performed, the previous duet we had seen runs off stage off the same side.
Both of these duets are similar in the use of contact work and use of unison.

The physical setting for this piece is a orange/dark green and grey backdrop with no props and the lighting is dark and has some spotlights in random places on the stage leaving some phrases of both duets in shadow and some in light.
The costume complements the physical setting as its roughly the same colour so they could almost be camouflaged.
This could link to the lighting as maybe Pite's idea for this piece was something to do with being hidden as the lighting covered some parts of the choreography and the costumes matched the backdrop so the dancers would be concealed.

The accompaniment is an orchestral piece which sounds like a combination of string instruments such as violin and cello. The piece starts off slow but then suddenly becomes faster and continues to be for the rest of the choreography.

The style behind it is all contemporary based with maybe some placed positions and arm movements but the majority of the choreography is loose but has controlled partner work.

As I mentioned above, I have come up with the idea of been concealed as maybe a starting point for her piece as her physical setting and costume have linked together in that aspect.

Her movement style is something I personally really like and base my style around so overall I really enjoyed this piece.

    What do you feel are the similarities and differences between this piece and the first work you reviewed by Pite?

    1. Starting with the similarities, they both involve a lot of partner work and contact work involving lifts and counter balances for example. And both partner work was between a female and male dancer.
      The only difference I can think is the movement style as 'Flight Pattern' is seen as quite theatrical where the other is contemporary with classical elements.

      Because Pite is drawn to strong narratives and intentions in her works, perhaps she wanted to start of this piece with contact and partner work so the audience are able to see that the idea's that have been behind this piece. For example; it could show a relationship of some sort.

In your view, what do you think the piece trying to communicate or say to its audience? Please further discuss the style and movement used? What is the purpose behind the choreography and what impact did the music have and how did this have an effect on the piece? In your opinion, do you think the piece was successful - were there any parts you liked/disliked? In comparison to your first critical analysis, can you notice any similarities and differences between the two pieces? Please expand your analysis by discussing how the emotion and dynamic/ intention differed? Overall a well presented critical analysis.
