First Year: My Views On Creative Tasks

Choreography 4

Throughout these 4 weeks, we have been exploring different creative tasks and preparing ourselves to start our own choreography.

The first week we were assigned two improvisation tasks being based on our first name and phone number. For our name phrase, we had to to perform the letter with different parts of our bodies and for our number phrase, each number was portraying a different movement.
This was a new technique of improvisation and I think it was a very beneficial for us for the first choreography class.
I think my two phrases were very successful and I am very happy with the outcome of both of the phrases.

In our second choreography lesson, we focused on a duet with the inclusion of my name phrase and my partner's phrase. Different choreographic devices were brought in to our duet, them being canon, accumulation, mirroring and unison. Including these specific devices to our duet overall was very successful and it made our duet different to the others.
All the choreographic devices that we were taught, I will definitely use them when it comes to my own choreography.

In our third lesson, for homework we were shown a video of Justin Peck's choreography and we re-watched it again in lesson and we took into account the use of shapes during the piece. A sheet of paper was given around and everyone drew a shape that we then had to recreate ourselves with our bodies in a new phrase. Due to injury, I was only able to perform this phrase with my upper body and arms and executed the shapes with them and using the floor as the sheet of paper and walking the pattern of the shape.
When it comes to creating our own choreography, sketching and drawing my ideas will be something I will experiment with when in the starting process of our own choreographies.

  1. You have clearly explained each of the tasks and have identified a technique which will be useful to you in your future work. What did you think it was that made each of your sequences successful? Was it the way you performed and executed the pieces or was it your actual choreography that was unique and interesting?

    1. I think it was exploring new ways of improvisation and seeing what my body would do naturally to these sessions and from that for me it turned to be successful because I was out of my comfort zone and tried new things which could potentially help further when it comes to choreographing our solos.

  2. I really like the fact that you have gone into detail about each task. Do you think your motifs showed the intention of the task? What choreographic devices would you be most likely to use?

    1. I believe that my phrases showed the intention and that they would be clear to an audience. It was a different way of improvisation that I have done before which was a challenge at first but I was able to push myself to get a better outcome. In terms of choreographic devices, I think repetition is always useful in any choreography and will defiantly look into it when it comes to our own choreography.

  3. Good work! Looking back at your reflective notes, summarise how you responded to all creative exercises, including the zodiac task and the rain concept. Think about; what did you find easy or difficult, was your movement readable to your audience, have these processes allowed you to form your own ideas for your own creative processes to create movement? If so, what are your new ideas? Reflecting back to the task, please go into detail discussing what we did during the lesson as well as your thoughts towards the video’s we watched. How did the creative task (rain concept) relate to the practitioner?

    1. Unfortunately, this two tasks you mention I was injured for, so I am unable to explain the movement as I was not able to take part in these choreography sessions.

  4. I really enjoyed reading your blog, I wondered which of the choreographer's creative processes will influence yours the most?

    1. I think the use of different choreographic devices would influence my practitioners creative process as it is something that is used in every piece of choreography and adds to the movement style. Choreographic devices can also help portray the narrative of the piece more clearly to the audience so they're able to fully comprehend what the piece is about.
