First Year: Stimuli for Solo Choreography
Choreography 5
In this choreography session, we were introduced to all the stimuli for our solo choreography. We spent the time in pairs going around to each picture and brainstorming ideas that first come to our minds when we look at each stimulus.
This was the first stimuli looked over and we noticed the emotions behind the picture was showing sadness, isolation and loneliness. The overall background seems out of place and broken and the thoughts behind this altogether for me shows the end of the world and having the feeling of losing hope and giving up. The telephone wires are breaking in the background which could imply some sort of catastrophe which links to the idea of the end of the world.
The second stimuli we analysed was of a man taking a picture with an old-fashioned camera. The overall impression from this picture was all positive and showed excitement and happiness.
When I take pictures personally its to capture the memories so I can look back on them later on in life. I also noticed the camera and it looked quite old and vintage which could convey that this picture altogether is from a different era which could create the idea of different social dances.
The third stimuli we investigated a picture of a child with a gun and it straight away gave me an emotional response as it is quite an upsetting picture. The emotions shown from the girls in the picture are sad, scared, lost, confused and torn . It shows a violence at a young age and being associated in a place with war. They could be potentially fighting against what they want to do which could link to incorporating static movements in the choreography as they would be following orders.
A fourth stimuli was of a human head with cogs inside. My thoughts on this was that they could have an organised routine and they do the same things and actions every day which would link to having repetition in the movement for the choreography. This also could imply that they don't have any control over what they want to do and it's like it's already been set what they do everyday.
The fifth stimuli was the pictre of data. My first impression straight away was the patterns it created and for me personally, it reminded me of the creative task we experimented with where we drew shapes and created a phrase based on these shapes. This also links to Justin Peck’s style and how he bases his chreographies on geometric shapes. This was my second choice for my choreography as I quite liked the abstract style of using shapes as movement.

A picture of pollution was the sixth stimuli and it gave off a negative ambiance when I first saw it. It could convey a lot of different situations for example; death, work places such as factories which could link to the economy. For an abstract perspective, you could include natural sounds such as breath and which could link to the struggle to breathe as the smoke is becoming the majority of the oxygen around us.
The seventh stimuli was of DNA and I thought about family and generations straight away and how you could do the stages of life in the choreography starting from young, growing up to old. You could just base the solo on one life stage and focus on what key things happen during that time. Similarly with the picture of data, you could use the patterns of DNA as your main focus of the piece and movement.
The final stimuli and the one I have chosen for my choreography is a human head that is empty inside. I have chosen the idea of sleep and how the brain is still processing things but it is hidden and no one can see it but other ideas for this stimuli could be loss of memory or perhaps not being able to think for themselves which could link to mental health problems.

Your piece is very detailed, and you have mentioned so interesting points, such as adding natural sounds to the piece to add depth to the choreography. I found the paragraph on Human 2 really fascinating as I hadn't viewed this picture as illustrating sleep and memories being hidden.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for your comment Eliza.
DeleteI really liked how you interpreted each go the stimuli and described each of them. I wondered which one you are leaning towards for your final piece?
ReplyDeleteI mention above in blog on the last stimuli.
DeleteI have chosen the human head which has empty inside which I have linked to the idea of sleep and how the brain is still processing things but no one is able to see them.
All of the images are quite contrasting and the ones you have written about have given you a variety of different ideas. So what in the end steered you away from your second choice and towards your final choice?
ReplyDeleteSee above in Niamh's comment.
DeleteI love how each stimuli was explained in great detail and illustrated with a picture to further the audiences knowledge. What stimuli are you choosing for you final piece. And can you explain what led you to this decision?
ReplyDeleteSee above in Niamh's comment.
DeleteI noticed the other people that chose it went towards the mental health route and illness however I thought of sleep because first the picture itself looks like he could perhaps be asleep and as I mentioned above, when your asleep no one can see what the brain is processing or what your dreaming about. And I saw the smudges under the eyes maybe as him seeing the dream.
Did the use of group discussion have an impact on your thoughts? What other ideas and interpretations were discussed during the lesson? Reflecting back, which stimuli were you most drawn to at this moment and why? What drew you away from the other options?
ReplyDeleteI mention above on the other ideas that were mentioned when discussing this stimuli such as mental health issues or illness such as dementia and other brain and memory illnesses.
DeleteI chose this one because it seemed the most abstract of them all in my opinion. Some of the stimuli were quite literal and I wanted to explore more in depth into the stimuli to make sure that my final idea was different to everyone elses.
