During our first choreography class, we were assigned two improvisation tasks which consisted of writing our name with different parts of the body and performing our phone number with each number portraying a different movement.

With my first phrase, my immediate instinct was just to use my arms and legs to create the letters but I was introduced to new ideas involving my elbows, shoulders and stomach. I began the solo with the capital H and thought of being quite linear with this particular letter so I used both arms up as the first line and my right leg followed hitting 90 degrees to the side to create the line across. I then transferred the weight across and continued the line changing legs so my left leg was up in the same angle as before. This letter was finished with lifting my other arm to create the other line up. For the first a, I used my elbow to make the rounded shape and at the same time I sidestep to the right side finishing in a lunge to make my phrase travel slightly. With the n shape, I pushed off my left leg from the lunge and executed a bent fan kick to show the up and over and then for the next n, I performed the up and over movement but using my stomach. Repeating the same footwork with the first a, I used my shoulder in the circular motion instead of my elbow. To finish with the last h, I used the idea of the arm up and keeping the linear movement but ending with a lunge with my right leg to create the arch of the lowercase h.

For the second task, we had to create a phrase that was our phone number but with each number portrayed a different type of movement. As everyone's number starts with 0 and 7, I wanted to make sure that my movement was unique and my own style. Following that statement, I began my phrase with a shunt forwards which was 0's movement which led to 7's movement which was a kick which I performed forwards. This continued into another shunt towards the right which led to stillness. I then executed a turn with my right hand up which fell into a swing of the arms in a circular motion which then followed through to change direction finishing in a slight side lunge. The swing was performed again but only with one arm and I repeated the changing directions and finished in the same lunge but leaning towards the left. The final movement was a turn that I took off on my right leg with both arms slowly coming up.
We were then instructed to incorporate different movement qualities into one of the phrases. These qualities being impulse, impact and release. I focused on the impulse aspect as I felt that my phone number phrase movements complimented the idea of sharp and fast executed movements to soft and fluid movements. An example of this is seen in the first movement where I shunt forwards and I make my arms come to the side fast and strong but then I execute a kick and suspend the leg down and lean to the floor creating the fluid and controlled movement quality.

  1. You have gone into a lot of detail regarding the content of the creative tasks. As you have posted your videos, I feel as though you do not need to go into as much detail as you have done.
Please reread the task within my blog post and ensure you remain focused on the questions. Discuss how the creative process made you feel, also the different strengths and weaknesses you will encounter during this module. You could then develop this by discussing how your strengths assisted you within the task and how you will improve the potential weaknesses over the module. If you could also include what the purpose of each task was and how it benefited you throughout the lesson.
Also use the post I uploaded on my blog if you need help uploading the videos. After uploading, it would be beneficial to include a sentence or two connecting the blogs content to the videos so the reader can clearly understand what they portray.
It would also be beneficial if you detailed how you felt during the creative tasks and when completing the movement. Question how each creative task made you feel, if you found anything difficult, and how this affected your movement. Consider how you would change the movement if you had to perform this task again.
Overall, some very good aspects within the post, I look forward to reading the improvements.

  2. I love the fact you have gone into so much detail about the movements you have included within these tasks. I have also found your piece really creative. how did you find the first task? what were your strengths and weaknesses?

    2. I really enjoyed this first task as it was a new way of exploring improvisation techniques, however I did find it hard not to repeat my movements. For example; because I have two of each letters in my name, it caused me to have the same movements. So my challenge was to still perform the same move but to execute it differently than the first time.

  3. There's a great amount of detail on what you physically did in the class but I would like to know which of the tasks you enjoyed the most? And why you prefered one over the other?

    1. I preferred the number phrase as it gave me more of a variety of movement than the name phrase presented me. Having more choice in movement benefited me in the way of exploring different ways of doing the same movement. For example; if 7 was a kick, I could perhaps do a kick standing up and then a kick on the floor.

  4. I like how you explained the development of your movement and how your creativity evolved. How did you move past the challenges of each task?

    1. As I mention above how I faced the challenges of not having repeated movement due to having letters in my phrase repeated, I explored different levels I could perform the movement or style so it was clearer for the audience watching.
